Men of Zion – 2024
“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”
1 Corinthians 16:13
Hi Men:
“For we are His workmanship, created ‘in’ Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” (Eph 2:10)
This verse was one of many discussed at Zion. You can see how critical it is to be “in” Christ as we fulfill this often overlooked verse in Ephesians 2. We all know Eph 2:8-9, but how profitable to spend time on vs 10. God is so faithful and He will give us the strength to do the work that He has prepared beforehand. When we take the time to find His purpose for our life….. it is a total “Game Changer.” We will pinch ourselves every morning saying, “Lord Jesus, I can’t believe I get to do what You prepared for me….. thank you!”
ZION BOOT CAMP
WOW!…… Where do I begin? Well, first of all…. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS! Everything “fell” together because of those valuable prayers. There are so many wonderful stories that happened this past weekend at the 14th Annual Zion Boot Camp……. and I only heard a fraction of them. The teaching was so profitable and the fellowship was amazing!
I want to thank our main speakers. Here are the men during the Sunday Q & A discussion, which by the way, was profound! Below are the titles of their specific talks:
- Bill McCurine (San Diego): “The Cost of Discipleship”
- Winston Parker (Jacksonville, FL): “Chaos and the Unbalanced Life”
- Chris Martin (Lititz, PA): “Whose Job is the Ministry”
- Trevor McDowell (Scottsdale, AZ): “Living as a Disciple”
- Jerry Bangert (Tucson, AZ): “Heaven & Hell and the Image of God”
Here are a few of the guys having breakfast at the amazing SpringHill Suites!
Let me share just a few comments that were made on the evaluation forms:
- “I want to express how much of a blessing and honor it has been to attend this special event. It has been an incredible opportunity to learn and grow, becoming a more devoted and determined man of God. I am deeply grateful to all those who spoke and taught throughout this past weekend.”
- “Zion is always the highlight of my year.”
- “I will make this conference a priority.”
- “It was the push I needed, the impact was real.”
- “Amazing to experience the love and knowledge of God-fearing men.”
- I have never felt more aligned with my purpose, and how to best utilize my skills, gifts, talents to do His will.”

Before we close this brief report on Zion, let me share one amazing thing that happened at Zion and culminated on Monday. Many of you remember Jorge Hernandez. He shared his testimony at Zion in 2021. If you have not heard it, Here Is The Link. Jorge was in a car that exploded, he lost both legs and with other severe injuries. The doctors gave him a minus 5% chance of survival.
Fast forward…. Jorge was once again at Zion and we invited his girlfriend, Astrid Roman from Guatemala so they could share the free time together. Guess what? On the day after Zion, Jorge proposed to Astrid and she said…. YES! We see God’s grace and mercy on this precious couple. Jorge asked for prayer that they would glorify God as a couple!

A Few Quotes
“Preaching the gospel is to us a matter of life and death; we throw our whole soul in to it. We live and are happy if you believe in Jesus and are saved. But we are almost ready to die if you refuse the gospel of Christ.” Charles Spurgeon
“The gospel is not something we come to church to hear; it is something we go from church to tell.” …. Vance Havner
John Wesley was asked what he would do with his life if he knew that he would die at midnight the next day. His answer was something like this: “I would just carry on with what I’m doing. I will arise at 5:00 AM for prayer, then take a house meeting at 6:00 AM. At 12 noon, I will be preaching at an open-air meeting. At 3:00 PM, I have another meeting in another town. At 6:00 PM I have a house meeting; At 10:00 PM I have a prayer meeting and at midnight, I would go be with the Lord.”
If we knew we were to die at 12:00 tomorrow night, would we have to step up our evangelistic efforts, or could we in all good conscience carry on just as we are?
Handel’s Messiah
Live from the Sydney Opera House
Men: As we move closer to Christmas, put this performance on your calendar. It is 2hr 30min, but so uplifting. Almost as uplifting as a college football game which according to the NCAA, the average game is now 3hr 22min. I know, I know…. I’m being a “piece of work.”
This was performed December 2019. My wife and I watch it every year. Impressive indeed………
(See below for a condensed excerpt about George Frideric Handel – he wrote it in less than 25 days!)
Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Sings Handel’s Messiah (Watch on YouTube 2hr 30mins)
Handel’s Messiah. It first premiered in Dublin, Ireland in 1742. George Frideric Handel was born in Germany. He was a large, awkward man, rough, and hot-tempered that earned him the nickname “The Great Bear.” Handel was also deeply religious. Divinely inspired, this two-and-a-half hour composition took less than 25 days to write! When it was completed, he sobbed and said, “I think that I did see all heaven before me, and the great God Himself!” He was 56. Handel utilized vast portions of Scripture from 14 books of the Bible, including “For unto us a child is born…and the government shall be upon His shoulders…His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God…the Prince of Peace.” Beethoven said, “Handel was the greatest composer that ever lived.” On his grave at Westminster Abbey is “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth.” What would Christmas be without Handel’s Messiah and the Hallelujah Chorus? Hallelujah to the King of Kings
No Little People, No Little Places
Men: Even though this article came out in October, how timely it is as we move into Christmas. Below is a link to a short message by Randy Alcorn (3 minute read). I love where Randy Alcorn quoted Francis Schaffer:
Francis Schaeffer would say, “No little people, no little places.” Everything God gives us to do is big and beautiful and of eternal significance. So let’s not miss out on the chances God gives us every single day to make a difference to someone.
Schaeffer wrote: “Jesus commands Christians to seek consciously the lowest room. All of us—pastors, teachers, professional religious workers and nonprofessional included—are tempted to say, ‘I will take the larger place because it will give me more influence for Jesus Christ.’ … But according to the Scripture this is backwards: We should consciously take the lowest place unless the Lord himself extrudes us into a greater one.”
