“He who made the Pleiades and Orion And changes deep darkness into morning, Who also darkens day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, The LORD is His name.”
(Amos 5:8)
“Can you tie up the chains of the Pleiades, or untie the cords of Orion?
(Job 38:31)
Hi Men:
I pray you have “….PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom 5:1). Not only is this peace ours for those that have been justified by faith, but we can also celebrate in our tribulations (Read Romans 5). Powerful stuff……….
I guess I’m on a galactic kick these days. I was talking with one of the brothers yesterday morning and he mentioned the verse above from Job. He said that astronomers today know that all the stars of the Pleiades are moving in the same direction across the sky at the same speed. In contrast, Orion’s stars are gradually moving away from each other (Pleiades = gravitationally-bound / Orion = non gravitationally-bound). So read the verse from Job again. One is “bound” or “tied up” and the other is “unbound” or “untied.” Could anyone during Job’s era have known this? I’ll let you answer it…………
Many of you know my favorite star is Betelgeuse. You can easily see it with your naked eye. Just look for Orion’s Belt in the Orion Constellation (eastern sky) and look to the left (90°) from the highest star. Two nights ago, I was outside reflecting on Betelgeuse. God created it …. spoke it into existence. It’s over 750 million miles in diameter! That’s right…. 3/4 of a billion miles! Our own Sun is just 865 thousand miles in diameter. And by the way, over 1 million Earths could easily fit inside it. As I was talking with God, I said, “Lord, You are the One that created Betelgeuse and it’s so large I can’t comprehend it. So why do I worry and have anxious thoughts at times?”
Maybe because I have my mind on things below (temporal) vs. things above (eternal). I needed to remind myself what I have shared with many men over the years. If Betelgeuse were plopped in the center of our own solar system, it would go past Mercury, Mars, Venus, Earth and even past Jupiter! So here is the question: “If you could tie a string to your wrist and stretch it to Betelgeuse (640 light years from Earth) and pull one hair out of your head and lay it perpendicular on the string. The width of the hair is our life on this earth and the string is eternity………. So here’s the question men: How much time are you spending on the hair vs. the string?” We have said many times that what we do now (for Christ) will make an appreciable and apparent difference as to what our eternity will look like. The first place we start is spending more time in the Word and I’m speaking to myself on that one.
