The Formidable Harpy Eagle
A Testament to God’s Creative Power

“And the birds of the heavens, and let them tell you…….
That the hand of the LORD has done this”
Job 12:7-10

Hi Men:
A dear buddy of mine in Montana sent the following note from Oswald Chambers. It was so good to reflect on this truth…..

———-
WISDOM FROM OSWALD CHAMBERS
The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God you fear everything else. “Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord”;…
from The Highest Good—The Pilgrim’s Song Book, 537 L
———-

So many in the Christian world today have it reversed….. thinking that if we love the Lord then we will fear Him. Actually it’s the opposite… almost like an antinomy:

Fear of the Lord is the doorway to Love Him

If you do a quick search on Blue Letter Bible or Bible Gateway, you will find that there are hundreds of verses on the “Fear of the Lord” and only several dozen on the “Love of the Lord.” The following thoughts were also profound:

Teachings from 4 Great Preachers

  • C.H Spurgeon: Fear leads us to refuge and quells other fears.
  • Jonathan Edwards: True fear awakens the soul to be receptive to God’s grace.
  • J.C. Ryle: Filial fear results in faithful service and overcomes fear of man.
  • Martin Luther: Fear and love coexist; fear grounds love in reverence.

Fear First, Love Follows

  • Fear awakens us to God’s HOLINESS and our desperate need for Him.
  • That awakening humbles us—driving us to repentance and surrender.
  • Out of humility flows gratitude and trust, and from there, true love for the Lord is born.

I grabbed one of my memory cards and took this photo yesterday out by my cactus 🌵

“How blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
who greatly delights in His commandments.”
Psalms 112:1

I knew very little about the Harpy Eagle and you can’t help but marvel at God’s handiwork. Let me give you a brief glimpse:
This bird is not only the largest eagle in the world—it is also one of the most awe-inspiring predators of the rainforest canopy. Found in Central and South America, their enormous nests, built high in the canopy (up to 150+ feet), can be the size of a double bed with 4 foot walls…. Crazy

Physical Marvels

  • With a wingspan up to 7 feet and weighing 20 pounds or more, the Harpy Eagle is an aerial powerhouse…… 50% greater than the American Bald Eagle.
  • Its talons can grow up to 5 inches long—the size of a grizzly bear’s claws. With these, it can snatch monkeys or sloths right off the trees, sometimes carrying prey equal to its own weight. They can exert 500N (Newtons) of force – as much as a German Shepherd’s bite!

  • Despite its size, the Harpy is designed for maneuverability. Its broad wings and long tail allow it to twist and dart between dense rainforest branches—an engineering feat only the Creator could design.
  • Its vision is said to be eight times sharper than ours, and its crown of feathers can be raised to funnel sound toward its ears, giving it heightened hearing as well.

The Hand of the Creator
Every detail of its design—the aerodynamic feathers, the crushing talons, the piercing eyesight—reflects the wisdom and power of the Almighty.

Men, I don’t think I have ever put the following devotion in my Friday Letter. 2 Timothy 2:2 is the core verse of Ministry in the Marketplace, and it is the lifeblood of our walk with Jesus—we are following the example He showed us. As Dawson Trotman would say, “Where’s your man?”
If you haven’t seen how powerful discipleship is, check out this chart:

OUCH!

Can you believe this statement by Tozer was over 65 years ago?
Think about the mess we have today!

“The contemporary moral climate does not favor a faith as tough and fibrous as that taught by our Lord and His apostles… And the fault lies with our leaders. They are too timid to tell the people all the truth. They are now asking men to give to God that which costs them nothing.”
A.W. Tozer 1897 – 1963
