SQUID DO FLY

Oh ….. Sure they do 🙄

Hi Men:
I pray you had quiet time this week to meditate on Jesus who saved your wretched soul. With everything going on around the world, it’s good to remind ourselves every day that God is still sovereign over it all. Sometimes the best way to reset our perspective is to step back and look at His creation. The Bible tells us that all creation praises its Creator. Before we look at one amazing example from the ocean this week — the flying squid — let’s read these powerful words from Psalm 148. Let’s stop right now, and praise Him!

Psalm 148:1-13

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights!
Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts!
Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light!
Praise Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they were created.
He has also established them forever and ever; He has made a decree which will not pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth, Sea monsters and all deeps;
Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
Mountains and all hills; Fruit trees and all cedars;
Beasts and all cattle; Creeping things and winged fowl;
Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth;
Both young men and virgins; Old men and children.
Let them praise the name of the Lord, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.

The Flying Squid — Yes, Squid Actually Fly

For generations, sailors told stories about squid flying through the air. Scientists thought they were drinking too much rum 🍾 … until researchers finally captured the phenomenon on camera. It turns out the sailors were right.

Here are just a few of the astonishing abilities of these creatures:

Amazing Flying Squid Facts

Rocket Launch System
Before takeoff, the squid fills its mantle cavity with water. It then violently contracts its muscles and blasts the water through a narrow funnel, launching itself from the ocean like a living rocket.

Real Flight, Not Just a Leap
Squid flights typically travel 30–50 feet, but some have been recorded flying up to 180 feet and 20 feet above the water.

Wing-Like Tentacles
During flight, the squid spreads its fins and tentacles outward, forming a radial wing structure. A thin membrane between the tentacles acts like webbing that helps generate lift.

Powered Flight
The squid is not simply gliding. While airborne it continues jetting water, accelerating itself even after leaving the ocean.

Fast for Its Size
Flying squid can reach speeds of about 25 mph (11 m/s)—far faster than when swimming underwater.

Energy-Saving Travel
Some squid migrate over 600 miles across the ocean. Scientists believe flying may actually save energy during these long journeys.

Engineers Are Studying Them
Researchers working in biomimetics are studying flying squid to design drones that can operate both underwater and in the air, something that has proven extremely difficult for human engineers.

The Man Behind
Saint Patrick’s Day

On March 17, many around the world will celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. The real Patrick was a bold evangelist who lived during the fifth century and was persecuted for his faith while sharing the gospel among the Druids in Ireland. Later, shamrocks and mythological leprechauns would creep into the holiday celebrations of Saint Patrick’s Day.

Patrick’s life was spent in hardship. Just before he turned 16, his family’s holiday villa in Britain was raided by Irish pirates who kidnapped Patrick and sold him into slavery in Ireland. Though raised in a Christian home, Patrick came to faith in Christ during his time in slavery. In his autobiography, he wrote, “The Lord opened my senses to my unbelief, so that … I might remember my many sins; and accordingly I might turn to the Lord my God with all my heart.” ………

J.C. Ryle doesn’t mince his words……. ouch!

“Let us awake to a sense of the perilous state of many professing Christians. ‘Without holiness no man shall see the Lord’; without sanctification there is no salvation (Hebrews 12:14). Then what an enormous amount of so-called religion there is which is perfectly useless!” J.C. Ryle
